20 Simple Ways to Reduce Oil Consumption

20 simple ways to reduce oil consumptionThe following list was compiled by Greenpeace and their readers on the top 20 ways we can all use less oil and reduce demand for the black poison ruining our beautiful planet:

1. Carpool, cycle or use public transport to go to work.

2. Choose, when possible, products packaged without plastic and recycle or re-use containers.

3. Buy organic fruits and vegetables (fertilisers and pesticides are based on oil more often than not).

4. Buy beauty products (shampoo, soap, make-up) based on natural ingredients, not oil.

5. Choose when possible locally produced products (less transport involved).

6. Buy clothes made out of organic cotton or hemp - not from oil derivatives.

7. Use non-disposable items in picnics and summer festivals.

8. Quit bottled water.

9. Fly less or quit flying altogether.

10. Demand that your government encourage renewable energy instead of subsidizing oil.

11. Avoid styrofoam, bubblegum, or ballpoint pens.

12. Walk the 10 mins to the shops and leave the car at home by deciding to look at something new in your neighbourhood that you wouldn’t notice from the car.

13. Remove useless and needless items from your car. As a general rule of thumb, for every extra 100 pounds you carry around in your car, you reduce its gas mileage by one to two percent; and if you want to get into the minutiae of it, for every extra pound you carry around in your car, you reduce its gas mileage by 1/100th to 1/50th of a percent.

14. Switch to a renewable energy-only electricity provider.

15. Turn down the thermostat one degree in your house.

16. Use the suggestion box in restaurants, stores and other business establishments to encourage them to be more conscientious with the use of oil based packaging and bags.

17. Install, if possible, a solar water boiler on your house.

18. Improve the isolation of your house - the investement pays-off quickly!

19. Ask your boss if you can work from home - less commuting!

20. Vote for, support and foster politicians who are DEDICATED to clean renewable energy.
